If your web host runs Unix or Linux, chances are they will support .htaccess. This is a plain text file containing commands that will do lots of cool things like; password protecting folders, redirect users automatically (without penalty from search engines), redirect people to custom error pages. You can also use it to change your index file, ban users, create search engine friendly URLs and a lot more.
