TrackBack

TrackBack is a type of peer-to-peer communication system designed to inform a web site that you have referenced something on their site. It is popular among bloggers because it allows conversations to span across many blogs and it helps the original author keep track of who is linking or referring to his or her posts.

For example: Blogger A posts about a popular music band, then Blogger B posts something about music and adds a link to or talks about Blogger A's comments. The TrackBack Ping (if both sites software is set to receive these pings) would tell Blogger A that Blogger B had referenced them.

This also allows readers to follow the topic from one site to another.
